READER COMMENT: I also live in WI, and am a former teacher. I support Scott Walker. I admire your commitment to your civic duty, but let's not whitewash the issue. The recall effort has been funded in large part by national unions and labor groups.

As a parent, I was disgusted that teachers brought their students to the protests. As a teacher, I was appalled that some teachers recieved falsified medical documents from doctros in order to use sick days to protest. Not only does that cost the school district money it could be using to better education, it is unethical. Why would I want someone who thinks it is acceptable to lie and commit fraud teaching my child anything?

This recall only makes the people who supported Scott Walker in the first place realize that they were correct in their judgement.

Public employee unions are not in the same category as private sector unions. When the unions are paying millions of dollars to elect the people negotiating their contracts, corruption is inevitable.

READER COMMENT:  Because of the corrupt system where the unions paid to elect the people negotiating the contracts, reforming the collective bargaining system ws the only way to actually accomplish any changes.

The fact that the unions still exist means that they are not as threatened as the unions try to make it seem. The people in the private sector are hurting, and they are tired of paying such high property taxes so that the public sector employees can reap better benefits than the people who pay their salaries.

READER COMMENT:  It was never about "destroying collective bargaining and unions."  It was about destroying their special privileges.  No union which has the voluntary support of those it purports to represent can be destroyed.  Those which rely upon government power are doomed to extinction.

In 2008, the Supreme Court held in Crawford v. Marion County Election Board that Indiana's voter-ID law is constitutional. The Court noted that the challengers could not produce a single voter disenfranchised by that law. Now thirty-two states have voter-ID laws to protect their electoral process.

Nonetheless, when southern states have passed these laws, Attorney General Eric Holder has invoked Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act to block these measures as having the effect of disparately impacting racial minorities. Mr. Holder has blocked laws in Texas and South Carolina, and litigation is now underway.

. . . while Mr. Holder is abusing Section 5 to block laws that do not go as far as Indiana's law upheld in Crawford, Mr. Obama's longtime political allies at the NAACP have gone to the United Nations Human Rights Council to protest voter-ID laws-a council comprised of the likes of Cuba, Russia, and China, with no jurisdiction over American elections. This thus becomes a dual-track approach to gin up a political issue to help Mr. Obama in his reelection efforts, invoking an outdated law and an international body whose members include notorious violators of voting rights.

With flattery and promises of power, I could get the courts to rule what I construe as against God and in favor of pornography, and thus, I would evict God from the courthouse, and then from the school house, and then from the houses of Congress and then, in His own churches I would substitute psychology for religion, and I would deify science because that way men would become smart enough to create super weapons but not wise enough to control them.

If I were Satan, I'd make the symbol of Easter an egg, and the symbol of Christmas, a bottle.

If I were the devil, I would take from those who have and I would give to those who wanted, until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious.

And then, my police state would force everybody back to work.

Then, I could separate families, putting children in uniform, women in coal mines, and objectors in slave camps.

If one wanted to destroy America, all one would need to do is break the country into parts and chisel away at each segment, bit by bit. Tuesday‘s episode (3/20/2012) of The Glenn Beck Program laid out America’s core components and described how each one is being undermined and thus, destroyed. But who is doing the destroying?

Glenn contends that those seeking to dismantle the American way are “no longer progressives.” Instead, the left has successfully morphed into what it had always intended to be: Full-fledged Communists.

And while this machine is “way beyond Barack Obama,” he is, in effect, its prime mover.   The president wanted to change the entire structure of the country. In order to do that, Glenn cautioned, one “needs to dismantle the current structure.”

“Progressives can say mission accomplished. Now it’s phase two.”

Cleveland, 27 percent

Miami, 27 percent

St. Louis, 27 percent

El Paso, Texas, 26 percent

Milwaukee, 26 percent

The most common characteristic of these cities is that for decades, all of them have been RUN BY DEMOCRATIC AND PRESUMABLY LIBERAL ADMINISTRATIONS. Some of them -- such as Detroit, Buffalo, Newark and Philadelphia -- haven't elected a Republican mayor for more than a half-century.

Crime is one of the results of the liberal agenda.

. . . options are not available to poor people. The only protection they have is an orderly society.

Democratic and black politicians are beholden to and serve the interests of the powerful vested interest groups, such as labor unions, teachers unions and assorted liberals, not the ordinary people who voted them into office.

This deserves a close read as Michelle Malkin details what company is connected to who, and those firms that benefit at the expense of American taxpayers.

Obama's promotion of algae as a fuel source at a campaign speech in Miami last month caught the nation's attention. But algae companies have been banking on administration support from Day One. In December 2008, when the White House announced the nomination of Energy Secretary Steven Chu, the CEO of Florida-based biofuels startup Algenol, Paul Woods, exulted to Time magazine: "You see this smile on my face? It's not going away. Everyone is really excited by this."

The next year, Woods and Algenol -- dubbed "Obama's favorite algae company" by Forbes magazine -- racked up $25 million in federal stimulus grants from Chu.

This self-sustaining crony ecosystem, powered by administrative fiat and wealth redistribution, gives new meaning to the phrase "green crude."

READER COMMENT:  As a scientist I am familiar with the concept of using algae as a source of hydrocarbon fuel. There is a lot of work going on in this technology in the private sector and aside from demonstrating a baseline process the technology is in its infancy. Essentially, the process uses solar energy and ambient carbon dioxide to facilitate algae reproduction. The algae is then harvested and processed to yield hydrocarbon polymers which may be used as fuel. There are many technical problems that stand between where we are now and a practical fuel delivery system. For example, a chemical processing plant, similar to modern petroleum refineries, has yet to be designed and it is far from clear what processes such a plant must perform. I suspect that there is no one in government that could be considered competent to evaluate the technical options for a project of this magnitude. Development of algae as a fuel source is best left to private enterprise where risk taking is by people that provide their own funding and not to government spending tax payer dollars.

BLOGGER COMMENT:  But what about the unintended consequences?  If people use algae for fuel, how does this interrupt the food supply for the wet creatures?

Several House Republicans are even more furious with Attorney General Eric Holder after new video surfaced in which he planned to “brainwash” the American people to oppose gun ownership. House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, who’s leading the congressional investigation into Operation Fast and Furious with Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, told The Daily Caller that he’s not surprised, as Holder and many of his deputies come from an extremist anti-gun background.

“[Assistant Attorney General] Lanny Breuer, Eric Holder come from a wing — certainly Lanny Breuer led the charge on the assault weapons ban,” Issa said during an interview on Capitol Hill. “Many of the people in the chain of Fast and Furious have a disregard for Second Amendment rights and a belief that they have to limit beyond what the courts have upheld — people’s rights to keep and bear arms. So, it’s no surprise that insensitive statements like that would be made by now-Attorney General Holder.”

READER COMMENT:  Holder is not totally anti-gun. He would not disarm the police or the military. Holder wants to be the one left holding the gun. This is how it works in 'third world' countries: only the dictator has the better weapons.

The more we find about F&F the more it becoms apparent the object was gun control and people did die because of this Operation. How far up the chain of command this goes I don't know but we can start with Holder. F&F alone should have crimminal charges filed. I would not mind see this MF in jail...for a long time. As far as race relations Holder will not enforce the law equally. Violating the U.S. Constitution to Justify ObamaCare

The U.S. Constitution, unlike the constitutions in other countries or other forms of government, limits the power of the federal government to specifically enumerated powers. Powers that are not specifically granted by the constitution are not authorized. Additionally, the first Ten Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, enshrined as the Bill of Rights, even forbid Congress from passing laws restricting individual freedom.

It has been stated that the "Welfare Clause" in the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution authorizes Congress to distribute entitlements and to redistribute wealth in the form of socialism. But in discussing this clause, Thomas Jefferson wrote, "a distinct substantive power, to do any act which might tend to the general welfare, is to render all the enumerations [of their specific constitutional powers] useless, and to make their power unlimited."

And James Madison, the “Father of the U.S. Constitution,” in a letter to fellow patriot Edmund Pendleton dated January 21, 1792, wrote: "[If] Congress can do whatever in their discretion can be done by money, and will promote the General Welfare, the Government is no longer a limited one, possessing enumerated powers, but an indefinite one, subject to particular exceptions." In other words, there is no authorization in the U.S. Constitution for the implementation of socialism in America.

Likewise, our constitution does not authorize the federal government to take over the U.S. health care system. To legally justify the implementation of ObamaCare, particularly the section that forces American citizens to buy health care coverage, congressional democrats and the president have used the (interstate) commerce clause of the constitution (that empowers congress to regulate the interstate commerce among the individual states of the nation).

Again, this "broad construction" (interpretation) of the constitution is tantamount to a usurpation of power that would erase the limits of authority set for the federal government by the framers of our constitution. Nor have specific contravening amendments been passed to legally alter those constitutional limits.

“Proved reserves” are what companies are currently extracting. This does not count untapped supplies. Consider the following from Investor’s Business Daily:

At least 86 billion barrels of oil in the Outer Continental Shelf yet to be discovered, according to the government’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.

About 24 billion barrels in shale deposits in the lower 48 states, according to EIA.

Up to 2 billion barrels of oil in shale deposits in Alaska’s North Slope, says the U.S. Geological Survey.

Up to 12 billion barrels in ANWR, according to the USGS.

As much as 19 billion barrels in the Utah tar sands, according to the Bureau of Land Management.

Then, there’s the massive Green River Formation in Wyoming, which according to the USGS contains a stunning 1.4 trillion barrels of oil shale — a type of oil released from sedimentary rock after it’s heated.

TENNESSEE STARTS TO UN-WIND AGENDA 21

UN Agenda 21: Organizational tentacles and “programmes” have been imbedding into U.S. sovereignty, sucking the lifeblood of this economy in the name of “caring” environmentalism

Lawmakers in Tennessee passed a resolution on March 15, 2012 condemning United Nations Agenda 21 as a “destructive and insidious” environmental plan to advance communist agenda under the guise of community planning.

The state House of Representatives voted 72-23 in favor of House Joint Resolution 587, which denounces the non-binding UN Agenda 21 plan.

The 1976 UN Conference on Human Settlements in Vancouver declared that government control of land use was “indispensable.” The document recommended that governments mandate population redistribution to accommodate the needs of biodiversity. This is the objective of the Wildlands Project, protected areas required by the Convention on Biological Diversity. EPA adopted the Ecosystem Management Policy to do so.

The Tennessee House resolution is non-binding, but citizens and lawmakers are concerned that the 288-page document uses non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and government entities such as the courts, the EPA, and zoning boards to carry out the plan.

Presidents Clinton and Obama passed Executive Orders in order to force the implementation of UN Agenda 21 in the U.S. Parts of UN Agenda 21 have been included in legislation or have been implemented administratively.

Local governments are bribed with federal grants to de-develop counties and bring them into compliance with zoning rules devised by the “visioning” consensus plans of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), the implementation arm of UN Agenda 21.

These “visioning” plans are sold to the community as the consensus. In reality, they are the wishes of a few informed individuals representing the interests of the United Nations. The local population has no knowledge or understanding of the ramifications of such plans.

The poverty rate among blacks was nearly cut in half in the 20 years prior to the 1960s, a record unmatched since then, despite the expansion of welfare state policies in the 1960s.

Unemployment among black 16 and 17-year-old males was 12 percent back in 1950. Yet unemployment rates among black 16 and 17-year-old males has not been less than 30 percent for any year since 1970 -- and has been over 40 percent in some of those years.

Not only was unemployment among blacks in general lower before the liberal welfare state policies expanded in the 1960s, rates of imprisonment of blacks were also lower then, and most black children were raised in two-parent families. At one time, a higher percentage of blacks than whites were married and working.

None of these facts fits liberal social dogmas.

While many politicians and "leaders" have claimed credit for black progress, no one seems to be willing to take the blame for the retrogressions represented by higher unemployment rates, higher crime rates, and higher rates of imprisonment today. Or for the disintegration of the black family, which survived centuries of slavery and generations of government-imposed discrimination in the Jim Crow era, but began coming apart in the wake of the expansion of the liberal welfare state and its accompanying social dogmas.

The time is long overdue to start looking beyond the prevailing political rhetoric to the hard realities.

What is a Socialist? Here’s a typical definition: Socialism is “any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.”

It takes a socialist to know a socialist. Like President Obama, McPherson is an “other-guy” socialist. An “other-guy” socialist wants an economic system that keeps competitors out. “Other-guy” socialists live above the common people because they believe they are superior. A free economy gives everybody an equal chance at success. Socialism creates class divisions and distinctions. “Other-guy” socialists want and work for socialism for everybody else while they live in their gated communities far from the masses. Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro are perfect examples. They are worth billions of dollars and yet grind down their people in the name of socialistic equity.

Consider this from The Washington Post:

The Obama administration on Monday blocked a new law in Texas that requires voters to show a photo ID, drawing fierce criticism from Republicans who say the move was aimed at boosting President Obama’s reelection prospects.

The Justice Department said that the law disproportionately harms Hispanic voters.

The action follows a similar move in late December to block a voter ID law in South Carolina that federal officials said adversely affects black voters.

American citizens need identification to purchase an adult beverage, drive a car and pick up certain over-the-counter medicines. But the Department of Justice (DOJ), which currently is a bastion of left-wing radicalism, argues that requiring an ID to make sure a person is eligible to vote is somehow discriminatory.

the DOJ is working hand-in-hand with scandal-ridden Project Vote to use Section 7 of the National Voter Registration Act to register as many welfare recipients as possible to vote in the upcoming election. (Because these government-dependent individuals typically vote for big government Democrats, some have called this Obama’s “Food Stamp Army.”)

At the same time, the Obama DOJ refuses to enforce an important counterpart to Section 7 of the NVRA – Section 8, which requires that state election officials keep voter rolls clean so that dead people, convicted felons and other ineligible individuals don’t have a chance to vote.

In addition to abusing the National Voter Registration Act, the Obama administration continues to bankroll ACORN and its offshoots with American tax dollars in defiance of a federal funding ban so the “community organizations” can continue their corrupt work and enact “stealth amnesty” policies that allow greater numbers of illegal aliens to vote for Obama and other liberal candidates in 2012.

the event that drove home the extent of Obama's antipathy to nearby, abundant, available oil was his veto of the Keystone pipeline. It gave the game away because the case for Keystone is so obvious and overwhelming.

Vetoing it gratuitously prolongs our dependence on outside powers, kills thousands of shovel-ready jobs, forfeits a major strategic resource to China, damages relations with our closest ally, and sends billions of oil dollars to Hugo Chavez, Vladimir Putin and already obscenely wealthy sheiks.

Obama boasts that on his watch production is up and imports down. True, but truly deceptive. These increases have occurred in spite of his restrictive policies.

They are the result of Clinton- and Bush-era permitting. This has been accompanied by a gold rush of natural gas production resulting from new fracking technology that has nothing at all to do with Obama.

Obama says of drilling: "That's not a plan." Of course it's a plan. We import nearly half of our oil, thereby exporting enormous amounts of U.S. wealth. Almost 60 percent of our trade deficit -- $332 billion out of $560 billion -- is shipped overseas to buy crude.

Drill here and you stanch the hemorrhage. You keep those dollars within the U.S. economy, repatriating not just wealth but jobs, and denying them to foreign unfriendlies.

Obama gave insider seats on the DOE to venture capitalists backing clean-tech firms. Then, his “administration embarked on a massive program to stimulate the economy with federal investments in clean-technology firms. … $3.9 billion in federal grants and financing flowed to 21 companies backed by firms with connections to five Obama administration staffers and advisers,” reports the Washington Post.

You need rare-earth elements to create solar panels, wind turbines and electric batteries for cars like the Chevy Volt. But President Obama keeps the EPA in business. And environmental regulations like those coming out of the EPA put the former world leader in rare-earth production, California’s Molycorp mine, out of business years ago. It is the government’s fault that we stopped producing rare-earths at Molycorp, which is just now chugging back to life under stiff environmental standards.

So, to recap:

Encouraging more investment (drilling) is a bad thing, because

More drilling leads to too much production (!), which is

… detrimental to the nation’s long-term energy security (!!)

Cheaper hydrocarbon fuel would work against the Administration’s goal of reducing carbon emissions.

Carbon-based fuels were destined cost more (via taxation) under a cap-and-trade system anyway.

We can raise the taxes on industry by taking away the deductions (not “credits”) which have historically, and successfully, encouraged drilling, and

Redirect that money, and then some, to our political friends who are invested in “green” technologies (read: Solyndra, Fisker, et al).

As was pointed out in my blog at the time, we have a Treasury Secretary who doesn’t know the difference between a tax deduction and a tax credit. Given his difficulties with TurboTax, perhaps this should not be surprising.

Nowadays, instead of worrying about “overproduction”, the Adminstration crows about success in the oil patch. Success that owes little to government initiatives.

In the real world, a call for higher taxes is a call for less drilling. Even discounting the impact on price, more domestic drilling would mean more American jobs. More domestic drilling also means more domestic supply, which will enhance the nation’s energy security.

READER COMMENT:  is dropping as well: two refineries in Pennsylvania, one in the Virgin Islands have closed this winter and another in Philadelphia is scheduled to close in late June. That cuts 360,000 bpd of gasoline supply to the East Coast. That will push prices up, especially if the Colonial pipeline from Houston is not able to cover a substantial part of the loss. The estimated gap at the moment is on the order of 160,000 bpd. Where will that come from? Well, if the price looks good, probably from Europe. Why are the refineries shutting down? Because the price of oil doe not improve their profit margin. It is the cost of their basic feed stock, and their profit is based on the difference between that price and the price of the various finished products produced from the crude. While the price of gasoline may be rising more or less in sync with the rise in crude prices, the prices of other products made by the refinery are not, so profit margins are squeezed. Add the cost of maintaining relatively old facilities and add the price of meeting additional EPA rules, most of which are designed to raise the price of all carbon fuels and not to protect the environment, and you have an obvious recepie for economic disaster, at least with respect to the refining business. With the loss of these three refineries on the East Coast, gas in the Washington, D.C., area could easily top $5/gallon before Labor Day. At that point, for purely political reasons, don’t be surprised if 0 opens the SPR and approves Keystone XL.

READER COMMENT:  …from fossil fuels overnight even if we wanted to. WTH do Obama and his fellow travelers expect us to do? Of all the vehicles that are on the road and in the air 99% run on petroleum products and no amount of alternatives will change the fact that these vehicles are designed for a single fuel. I can’t simply start using biofuels or anything else in my car. And as long as the fuels we use combust, they produce that boogeygas, CO2, so exactly why do they demand an end to the use of fossil fuels?

How about we demand a real long term, achievable, sustainable plan from them before allowing them to continue destroying the economy and disparaging an industry that employs over a million Americns.

Some things go up, some down, the trends for gold and oil (less so for oil) are both way, way out of line with the rest of the economy.

The problem with the price of oil isn’t a dollar-value issue. If it was, then you’d see equivalent-rate price-rises economy wide.

It’s a supply-shortage issue – an artificial supply-shortage created by the idiotic policies of US & European governments, beholden to the radical environmental movement.

People crowed about ‘inflation’ being to blame for the 07-08 gas spike, however the Crash of 08 proved them ALL WRONG – gas prices fell 50% in a few weeks, the price of oil went from $150/bbl to 60/bbl, but [b]there was no corresponding-percentage increase in USD value[/b].

It’s not inflation. It wasn’t last time, it isn’t this time, and it won’t be next time…

It’s an increase in consumption due to people perceiving ‘recovery’ in the industrialized world, combined with anti-oil government policies. 100% supply & demand, with a little bit of pessimism in the futures markets…

Get a pro-drilling president in, leave the monetary policy as it is (where it needs to be – eg, inflationary), and watch everything turn around, with no change in the dollar…

Holder was addressing the Woman's National Democratic Club. In his remarks, broadcast by CSPAN 2, he explained that he intended to use anti-smoking campaigns as his model to "change the hearts and minds of people in Washington, DC" about guns.

"What we need to do is change the way in which people think about guns, especially young people, and make it something that's not cool, that it's not acceptable, it's not hip to carry a gun anymore, in the way in which we changed our attitudes about cigarettes."
