Religion and the Politics
of Education

The public is
invited to a Townhall hosted by the Northwoods Patriots on Religion
and the Politics of Education on May 13, 2014, at Eagle River
Inn at 6:30 p.m. According to Karen Schroeder, President of
Advocates for Academic Freedom, “government
has no more right to inhibit the study of religion than to promote it.”
Ms. Schroeder's
presentation will address the impact that religion and education have had on
American educational, social, political, and economic policies.
Is a political
system or an educational system that embraces secularism complying with the
Supreme Court requirement that public institutions remain neutral in matters of
religion? If schools replace the study of religion with secularism, are the
schools being fair?
Drawing upon her
thirty-six years of experience teaching in public schools, Ms. Schroeder
identifies the integral role of religion in the classroom. She testifies before
legislative bodies about educational issues and is a member of Wisconsin's Educational
Communications Board. Thirty-eight publications carry her writings about
educational issues.
The culture
battles affecting classrooms tear apart the fabric of society and threaten
efforts to reform education. Several suggested solutions will be offered
including the belief that citizens must address the conflict between
educational policies and the role of religion in our society. Political and
religious factions must collaborate on a renewed vision of religious liberty in
all educational settings.
The educational
system upholds the First Amendment when religious liberty and rights of
students of all faiths are protected. Ms. Schroeder will discuss Supreme
Court cases and documents created by Human Secularists declaring that
secularism is a religion just as is Hinduism, Buddhism, and other
"isms". These court cases, according to Ms. Schroeder, answer the
question: Are all students required to leave their religion at the school house
door?
Ms. Schroeder
introduces her presentation with Mahatma Gandhi's words: "Those who say that religion has nothing to do with politics do
not know what religion is."
