Even with these gaudy numbers of guns and gun owners, gun violence in America among legal gun owners is statistically insignificant. In fact, the vast majority of gun crime is committed by criminals who carry their weapons illegally. Meanwhile, in America, a gun is 7 times more likely to stop a crime than to commit one.

Consider the recent and most famous instances of mass shootings in the news. All of these rampages took place in areas described as “gun free” zones.

What we've learned about mass shooters is that they are cowards. Many of them choose these unprotected areas because they offer the path of least resistance for the killer.

The honest truth is this. When you couple the fact that so few of our gun crimes are committed by legal gun owners, with the fact that most of these mass shootings happen in gun free zones by mentally imbalanced people… we get a completely different picture than the portrait painted by the liberal media and the Democrat Party.

Murder is always evil. It is always a violent and destructive act that attacks the very fabric of our communities. We must respond, and we must try our best to ensure these things happen less and less in the future. However, we cannot allow the emotion of the moment to overcome our abilities to reason and consider logic. The gun control ideas of the left are a red herring. They create as many problems as they solve. The best answers to violence and public safety come from conservatives who love liberty and value independence.

Don’t let the liberal media mislead you – we are safer with a gun in our hands than with our empty hands in the air begging for mercy.

In 1984, Singapore instituted a revolutionary idea: a system of compulsory saving for medical expenses. That was the same year my colleagues and I at the National Center for Policy Analysis introduced the idea of Health Savings Accounts in this country.

After almost three decades, Singapore has now come to the attention of a lot others, including a book by Brookings, and a whole slew of posts by bloggers.

At the risk of disappointing you, Singapore does not have a free market for health care. What it does have is an alternative to the European/American welfare state, in which private saving and private insurance do what employers and governments do in other countries. The Singapore philosophy is:

• Each generation should pay its own way.

• Each family should pay its own way.

• Each individual should pay his own way.

• Only after passing through these three filters, should anyone turn to the government for help.

If the United States adopted a similar approach to public policy, there would be no deficit problem in this country.

A shift from the public to the private sector. The most important thing Singapore has accomplished in health care (in contrast to all the other developed countries) is an enormous shift of money and power from the government to the private sector. Since 1984, the Singaporean government's share of the nation's total health care expenditure dropped from about 50% to 20%. When you stop to think about it, that's incredible.

Wherever you stand on this issue, please take the time to read this; it should wake you from your careless slumber on this important truth.          We know Dick Lamm as the former Governor of Colorado. In that context his thoughts are particularly poignant.   Last week there was an immigration overpopulation conference in Washington, D.C., filled to capacity with many of America's finest minds and leaders. A brilliant college professor by the name of Victor Davis Hansen talked about his latest book, "Mexifornia", explaining how immigration - both legal and illegal was destroying the entire state of California. He said it would march across the country until it destroyed all vestiges of The American Dream.          Moments later, former Colorado Governor Richard D. Lamm stood up and gave a stunning speech on how to destroy America.          The audience sat spellbound as he described eight methods for the destruction of the United States. He said, "If you believe that America is too smug, too self-satisfied, too rich, then let's destroy America. It is not that hard to do. No nation in history has survived the ravages of time. Arnold Toynbee observed that all great civilizations rise and fall and that ‘An autopsy of history would show that all great nations commit suicide.’”                 "Here is how they do it," Lamm said.           "First, to destroy America, turn America into a bilingual or multi-lingual and bicultural country. History shows that no nation can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures. It is a blessing for an individual to be bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society to be bilingual. The historical scholar, Seymour Lipset, put it this way: ‘The histories of bilingual and bicultural societies that do not assimilate are histories of turmoil, tension, and tragedy.’ Canada, Belgium, Malaysia, and Lebanon all face crises of national existence in which minorities press for autonomy, if not independence. Pakistan and Cyprus have divided. Nigeria suppressed an ethnic rebellion. France faces difficulties with Basques, Bretons, Corsicans and Muslims."                  Lamm went on:          "Second, to destroy America, invent 'multiculturalism' and encourage immigrants to maintain their culture. Make it an article of belief that all cultures are equal; that there are no cultural differences. Make it an article of faith that the Black and Hispanic dropout rates are due solely to prejudice and discrimination by the majority. Every other explanation is out of bounds."          "Third, we could make the United States an 'Hispanic Quebec' without much effort. The key is to celebrate diversity rather than unity. As Benjamin Schwarz said in the Atlantic Monthly recently: 'The apparent success of our own multi-ethnic and multicultural experiment might have been achieved not by tolerance, but by hegemony. Without the dominance that once dictated ethnocentricity and what it meant to be an American, we are left with only tolerance and pluralism to hold us together.' Lamm said, "I would encourage all immigrants to keep their own language and culture. I would replace the melting pot metaphor with the salad bowl metaphor. It is important to ensure that we have various cultural subgroups living in America enforcing their differences rather than as Americans, emphasizing their similarities."           "Fourth, I would make our fastest growing demographic group the least educated. I would add a second underclass, unassimilated, undereducated, and antagonistic to our population. I would have this second underclass have a 50% dropout rate from high school."           "My fifth point for destroying America would be to get big foundations and business to give these efforts lots of money. I would invest in ethnic identity, and I would establish the cult of 'Victimology.' I would get all minorities to think that their lack of success was the fault of the majority. I would start a grievance industry blaming all minority failure on the majority placation."          "My sixth plan for America's downfall would include dual citizenship, and promote divided loyalties. I would celebrate diversity over unity. I would stress differences rather than similarities. Diverse people worldwide are mostly engaged in hating each other - that is, when they are not killing each other. A diverse, peaceful, or stable society is against most historical precedent. People undervalue the unity it takes to keep a nation together. Look at the ancient Greeks. The Greeks believed that they belonged to the same race; they possessed a common language and literature; and they worshipped the same gods. All Greece took part in the Olympic games. A common enemy, Persia, threatened their liberty. Yet all these bonds were not strong enough to overcome two factors: local patriotism and geographical conditions that nurtured political divisions. Greece fell. "E. Pluribus Unum" -- From many, one. In that historical reality, if we put the emphasis on the 'pluribus' instead of the 'Unum,' we will "Balkanize" America as surely as Kosovo.          "Next to last, I would place all subjects off limits. Make it taboo to talk about anything against the cult of 'diversity.' I would find a word similar to 'heretic' in the 16th century - that stopped discussion and paralyzed thinking. Words like 'racist' or 'xenophobe' halt discussion and debate. Having made America a bi-lingual/bi-cultural country, having established multi-culturalism, having the large foundations fund the doctrine of 'Victimology,' I would next make it impossible to enforce our immigration laws. I would develop a mantra: That because immigration has been good for America, it must always be good. I would make every individual immigrant symmetric and ignore the cumulative impact of millions of them."          In the last minute of his speech, Governor Lamm wiped his brow. Profound silence followed. Finally he said, "Lastly, I would censor Victor Davis Hanson's book 'Mexifornia.' His book is dangerous. It exposes the plan to destroy America. If you feel America deserves to be destroyed, don't read that book."           There was no applause. A chilling fear quietly rose like an ominous cloud above every attendee at the conference. Every American in that room knew that everything Lamm enumerated was proceeding methodically, quietly, darkly, yet pervasively across the United States today. Discussion is being suppressed. Over 100 languages are ripping the foundation of our educational system and national cohesiveness. Even barbaric cultures that practice female genital mutilation are growing as we celebrate 'diversity.' American jobs are vanishing into the Third World as corporations create a Third World in America. Take note of California and other states. To date, ten million illegal aliens and growing fast. It is reminiscent of George Orwell's book "1984." In that story, three slogans are engraved in the Ministry of Truth building: "War is peace," "Freedom is slavery," and "Ignorance is strength."          Governor Lamm walked back to his seat. It dawned on everyone at the conference that our nation, and the future of this great democracy, is deeply in trouble and worsening fast. If we don't get this immigration monster stopped within three years, it will rage like a California wildfire and destroy everything in its path, especially The American Dream.         If you care for and love our country as I do, take the time to pass this on just as I did for you. The Constitutional Convention really was all about the kind of government this new nation would have for generations to come.   The men who represented the 12 colonies that attended –all the original colonies except Rhode Island sent delegates—knew that they faced yet another defining moment in the young country’s history.  

As the summer wore on, they knew they had to get it right.  Too much was at stake.  So they stayed. On September 17, 1787, the Constitution was signed by a majority of the delegates.  

And, now 226 years later, their original words still form the bulk of the rule of law in this country.  Their gift to future generations is truly a gift that keeps on giving—providing a framework for governing a country for generations, unlike any other document before or since has done or is doing.

At 4400 words, it’s both the oldest and the shortest constitution of any major government in the world.

The word democracy does not appear once in the Constitution, but the word republic does as the framers and signers made sure Article IV guarantees to every state a Republican form of government.

In 2004, Congress officially proclaimed September 17 of each year as “Constitution Day.” The primary purpose of such a proclamation was to force schools to teach about this founding document.  A majority of Congress apparently recognized that most Americans have no clue about this one-of-a-kind document and set out to require that public schools and actually any school that receives federal funding, deal with it once a year.  I would not leave the teaching about the Constitution just to the school.  

It’s not primarily up to the public schools or any school for that matter to teach the generations that are the recipients of this gift from our founders about the gift.  It’s ultimately up to parents to make sure their children know about the Constitution.  

It’s time for all of us to read the seven articles and the 27 amendments—and to understand them—and to hold our elected officials accountable to passing laws that comport with the Constitution—and hold judges accountable for accurately interpreting the Constitution instead of making it up new as they go along, seeking to support their own personal political agendas.

If we had as much concern for the future and future generations as our Founding Fathers did, we wouldn’t need a Congressionally mandated Constitution Day to remind us of this founding governing document.  We’d be carrying well-worn pocket copies with us and making sure we are protecting the gift that keeps on giving for those coming behind us.

The Common Core State Standards – a national assessment standard currently adopted in 45 states – places a greater emphasis on learning technology for even the youngest pupils. Many school districts in Common Core-aligned states are therefore pushing for an upgrade in technology, arguing that students need such devices to better prepare them for computer-based assessments.

The civil rights movement was able to overcome enormous obstacles and eventually win because people of good will—white, black, brown, and yellow—agreed that Jim Crow was wrong.  The black leaders who followed Dr. King’s philosophy of non-violent dissent held the moral high ground and every person with an ounce of decency in his hearts knew it.  

The most debilitating problems faced by black Americans today are no longer the work of bigots in white sheets.  Rather they are the result of drugs, crime, violence, fatherless families, a crippling high school dropout rate, and crushing levels of unemployment.

These problems . . . are indigenous and require a different kind of leadership and different solutions than were required in the days of Jim Crow.  Unfortunately, too many people who claim to be black leaders are still stuck in the 1960s.  

In view of the current disappointing state of race relations in our country, Americans would do well to ask:

As a pastor, Dr. King believed that all men—black, white, yellow, and brown—are children of God and as such stand equally before God.  He also knew that the overwhelming majority of Americans, in their heart of hearts, believed this too. This being the case, his demands for equality for black Americans represented a moral imperative, not a demand for special treatment.

In the wake of his death King’s dream was soon hijacked by racial hucksters who capitalized on the great man’s martyrdom to create a civil rights industry that has fed them and many others since King’s assassination.  The civil rights industry has also served to encourage, promote, and ignite racial divisiveness. 

Dr. King’s message of fairness, equality, and justice was clear and compelling.  It meant that in a nation founded on the principles of freedom and liberty Americans of all races should be able to expect fairness, equality, and justice. 

It did not mean that black Americans would be set apart by the government as a special category of citizens eligible for government entitlements distributed on the basis of race.

The Financial Times reports: “Nine of Europe’s biggest utilities have joined forces to warn that the EU’s energy policies are putting the continent’s power supplies at risk.” It states: “One of the biggest problems was overgenerous renewable energy subsidies that had pushed up costs for energy consumers and now needed to be cut.”

“It is only gradually becoming apparent,” writes Der Spiegel, “how the renewable energy subsidies redistribute money from the poor to the more affluent, like when someone living in small rental apartment subsidizes a homeowner's roof-mounted solar panels through his electricity bill.”

In a September 5 press release with the headline: “Administration Should Learn From Australia’s Carbon Tax Failure Before Committing US to Same,” Senator David Vitter (R-LA) says: “We can add Australia as an example to the growing list of failed carbon policies that are becoming so abundant in Europe.”

It is said: “The wise man learns from the mistakes of others, the fool has to learn from his own.” Sadly, it appears that the US has not learned to beware of the foolish politics of climate change.

Retired teachers who receive paychecks from a third-party service, or ‘rent-a-sub’ agency, instead of the school district would bypass a new state law that requires a 75-day separation window before a retiree collecting a public pension check goes back to government work.  The bill also allows two-thirds work — 880 hours per school year for teachers — before pension checks are put on hold.

READER COMMENT:  "The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District, for example, recorded 11,000 teacher absences last year, about 16 absences per teacher..." Let's see, they work nine months out of the year, get multiple days off for "Planning days", "Early Release days", etc., yet are still absent an average of almost 2 days a month, (or about 10% of the time considering a 20 work-day month). Does anyone else see an issue with attendance here?
