Join American Principles Project, Eagle Forum, HSLDA, Pioneer Institute, Michelle Malkin and others urging Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin, Chair of the National Governors Association, to end the Common Core State Standards Initiative.  Through this initiative the NGA has enabled corporations and other private interests to drive education policy which has compromised the power of parents.  So we are asking parents, educators and concerned citizens to add their names with ours in order to stop the Common Core State Standards.

May 5, 2014
Governor Mary Fallin
Oklahoma State Capitol
2300 N. Lincoln Blvd., Room 212
Oklahoma City, OK  73105

Dear Governor Fallin:

We write to you in your capacity as governor of Oklahoma and as the chair of the National Governors Association and its affiliate the NGA Center for Best Practices (together, “NGA”).  In particular, we write to you about NGA’s activities with regard to the national Common Core Standards system.

As set forth in the Joint Statement Regarding the National Governors Association’s Common Core Standards Initiative and the Constitutional Structure, NGA’s activities, including its ownership, development and propagation of the Common Core, have caused profound harm to our constitutional structure.  NGA has enabled corporations and other private interests to drive education policy and, concomitantly, compromised the power of parents.  It has enlisted the power of the federal government to bring about these changes and, in so doing, has weakened the power of states to defend the authority and rights of parents and other citizens.

More specifically, NGA has assisted the federal government in employing a strategy against the states that has divided and conquered the state checks and balances that are intended to guard against federal overreach.  It has presided over the development of math standards that lock children into a defective education, one that does not prepare children for studies in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) or for admission to competitive public and private universities.  It has presided over the development of English standards that fail to prepare children for authentic college work in the humanities and that weaken the formation of strong citizen-leaders and individuals of substance who are fully capable of exercising their liberties.

The pushback against the Common Core rests on parents’ love for their children and their defense of the Constitution that protects their rights to form their children and direct their education.  It is a movement based on truth, and on highly informed citizens –citizens who follow in the footsteps of the Founders.  It is a movement that continues to grow and which will be victorious.

We respectfully ask that, as chair of the NGA, you end the Common Core project.  We respectfully submit that your decisions on this matter will define your legacy.

Your Name

IRS Politicization is inappropriate in a Democratic Republic
Heritage – David Burton – 5/12/2014

As Table 9b of the 2013 IRS Databook shows, the typical audit rate for a median-income family is 0.6 percent. Thus, tea party donors whose names were disclosed to the IRS were subjected to an audit rate 17 times higher than other Americans.

As more and more people believe that the tax system is unfair and politically rigged, compliance will decline. More importantly, even the perception of the politicization of the IRS is endangering the confidence of the American people in the fairness and legitimacy of the federal government. It is entirely inappropriate to use the coercive apparatus of the state against political opponents. Neither the tax law nor any other law should be used to suppress peaceful political speech or political organizing.

The law, however, should be crystal clear that politically motivated IRS enforcement actions are subject to criminal sanctions no matter who requests or authorizes them. It is not. Congress should broaden section 7214 to cover IRS officials or employees who abuse their position, because politically motivated IRS enforcement action is equally inappropriate whether the official involved in instigating it works for the White House or the IRS.

How Far School Choice Policies Have Come in Two DecadeS
Heritage – Lindsey Burke – 5/12/2014

It’s amazing how far school choice options have come in a little more than two decades. From Milwaukee’s first-in-the-nation school voucher option in 1990 and the first charter school opening its doors in Minnesota in 1992, parental choice in education has advanced considerably, and innovation in school choice policy has taken shape in ways that were inconceivable in those early years. Today, 39 private school choice programs operate in 18 states and Washington, D.C.

When it was enacted in 2011, the Arizona ESA option was available only to children with special needs. Every year since has brought expansions to the program. Today, children with special needs as well as children from active duty military families, children of fallen soldiers, children in Arizona’s foster care system and children from low-income families assigned to underperforming public schools are eligible for the accounts.

Just as parents have looked to one another in the ESA program for advice about what works well for their children, so too have states begun to take cues from one another, replicating the most promising policy innovations. Last week, the Florida legislature passed legislation to create the Florida Personal Learning Scholarship Accounts—the Sunshine State’s version of ESAs. Florida would become the second state to embrace the most innovative option to date in school choice.

The combination of innovative education financing models such as ESAs, in conjunction with the growth of online learning, allows for education options that are truly customized and student-centered and are a far cry from the one-size-fits-all public education system. School choice policy has come a long way over the past two decades, and as Arizona’s experience has demonstrated, ESAs are the way of the future as states consider how to bring innovation, competition and choice into their education systems.

DPI’s highest compensated employees get richer
Wisconsin Reporter – Ryan Ekvall – 5/9/2014

Since June 2012, the department has handed out bonuses to 117 employees. The department employs 487 people, according to the staff directory. Four employees received two bonuses in the past two years.

In total, the department handed out $398,140 in permanent pay increases and $63,700 in one-time cash payments, records showed.

While most state employees received raises of 1 percent pay, it was best to be in Evers’ inner circle. Seven of 11 in Evers’ cabinet, who already make more in annual salary than 95 percent of Wisconsin workers, received an additional $30,230 in bonus compensation in the past two years.

“We’re sucking up money from poor, rural farming communities and giving it to handpicked administrators on criteria that isn’t even articulated to the public,” said Rae Ann McNeilly, executive director of Taxpayers United of America, a government watchdog organization which works in Illinois and Wisconsin. “The money goes into this big money pot and the bureaucracy grows.”

“Taxpayers need to be aware of where their money is going,” McNeilly said. “The bureaucrats don’t want you to see it. This is the problem with removing local control in education. We are siphoning money away from taxpayers up to a bureaucracy and removing it from the students DPI purports to be collecting it on behalf of.”

Common Core – No intelligence allowed
Eagle Rising – David Whitley – 5/9/2014

There are two things stand out in this explosive news story that has been all over the internet that should get the attention of parents of school age children everywhere.

The first is just how clearly Common Core shows itself to work, (the horror stories are legion) pushing kids into finding their own answers, versus learning true facts and gaining true knowledge. Facts of history are objective truth. What these Common Core exercises accomplish, what they are meant to accomplish, is to give comfort to students’ personal, subjective, and emotional conclusions.

The second thing we see is that Common Core -- rather than enhancing thinking -- is actually replacing critical thinking skills with emotional based outcomes. This is something liberals have perfected -- basing decisions on emotion and not rational thinking. Is Common Core the final tool of the left to wrestle full control of our children from their parents?

Do high school students no longer need to read Plato’s “Republic” in the ninth grade, or “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” in tenth? Do we no longer need to read the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, or Lincoln’s anti-slavery response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision?

Perhaps this is why Common Core is moving towards more "informational texts" and "sexualized stories"
So within Common Core, we can debate whether the Holocaust is true, but…
• Can we debate global warming or global cooling?
• Can we debate macro evolution or intelligent design?
• Can we debate Common Core?
• Can we debate the harm of an invasion of illegals?
• Can we debate abortion? Whether it stops a beating heart?
• Can we debate if second hand smoke is actually deadly?
• Can we debate the harmful effects of legalizing marijuana?
• Can we debate the cultural harm of same-sex marriage?
• Can we debate the personal harm of homosexuality?
• Can we debate whether a property owners rights trump a rat or tortoise?
• Can we debate historical fallacies in the History Alive! textbook?
• Can we debate the 1,400 years of Islamic terror, slavery and murder?
• Can we debate whether jihadists are actually following Islamic holy texts?
• Can we debate whether or not the First Amendment applies beyond Congress?
• Can we debate whether or not the Second Amendment protects an individual right?
• Can we even debate at all in America anymore?

The simple answer to these questions is no.

You see, liberals have a copyright on "Intelligence" and anyone trying to use it; is to be shouted down or sued.

The left will shut you down -- not with speeches, but with single words, slung like arrows, shot like bullets.  They will label you racist, sexist, bigot, prejudiced, intolerant, homophobic, or Islamophobic.

How do these words shut down debate and take effect, you might ask? You might recall the poetic words of yesterday, "Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never harm me." But today these words are no longer valid, for the words used by liberals are more than mere descriptions -- they are weapons, like the exploding money bag that splatters the thief with purple dye. Your name is discolored and you are thereby deemed a political leper forever more.

The Southern Manifesto:  Truth about Democrats
Freedom Outpost – F J. Rocca – 5/10/2014

Obstruction to freedom and civil rights for black people was nothing new for the Democrats. The KKK was largely populated by Southern Democrats. Ralph Byrd famously admitted he had belonged to the KKK and was curiously praised for using the term "white nigger" on a television interview. Lyndon Johnson, who has gone down in the Democrats' revisionist history as the white knight of Civil Rights, was known to have used the N-word freely to describe black people and, according to Kevin Jackson's splendidly vivid article, Civil Wrongs: Lyndon Johnson, favored enacting Civil Rights legislation only to placate

"uppity negroes" and "… to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference."

This "little something" started with welfare legislation that he thought would favor blacks "just enough" to grab them as a permanent voting bloc for Democrats.

Well, it may have gotten the Democrats black votes, but in the decades since the days of Lyndon Johnson's Great Society, Democrat policies, with the aid of liberal Republicans, have led the so-called black community to untold social instability, generational welfare and indigence, disintegration of families, illegitimacy, and astonishing rates of crime and imprisonment among black men, which have led them away from prosperity, their families and responsible behavior in the community. It has also led many black people to segregate themselves from whites according to attitude. Through the words and deeds of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Louis Farrakhan, Eric holder and Barack Obama, to name only a few of the race-baiters among us, black people have too often been encouraged to develop and expect racist attitudes toward and from white people.

Gosnell Movie raises $2.1 million to tell story of abortionist who killed babies born alive
LifeNews – Steven Ertelt – 5/9/2014

The campaign is open until midnight on Monday the 12th. We’ve got the minimum money we needed, but we would still like more people to join in. So we’re announcing a stretch goal – we want at least 30,000 people to become part of this historic project. They don’t need to donate much, even a dollar will do. And needless to say, all these dollars will go towards hiring better talent to make this movie even greater,” they added.

They launched a historic crowd-sourcing campaign to fund the film, Gosnell, through Indiegogo that was successful thanks to the help of some notable pro-life celebrities like Kevin Sorbo and despite the fact that Kickstarter initially kicked the movie off ts web site.

As the directors say:

Dr. Kermit Gosnell is the most prolific serial killer in American History, but almost no one knows who he is.

The Grand Jury investigating Kermit Gosnell’s horrific crimes said this:

This case is about a doctor who killed babies … What we mean is that he regularly and illegally delivered live, viable, babies in the third trimester of pregnancy – and then murdered these newborns by severing their spinal cords with scissors …. Over the years, many people came to know that something was going on here. But no one put a stop to it.   (Report of the Grand Jury)

Gosnell is serving several life sentences but the media basically ignored his crimes and his trial. They ignored the facts that emerged from the trial, like the fact that the babies he murdered suffered terribly. Here is what a neonatologist told the Grand Jury:

The neonatologist testified… If a baby moves, it is alive. Equally troubling, it feels a “tremendous amount of pain” when its spinal cord is severed. So, the fact that Baby Boy A. continued to move after his spinal cord was cut with scissors means that he did not die instantly. Maybe the cord was not completely severed. In any case, his few moments of life were spent in excruciating pain.   (Report of the Grand Jury)

The mainstream media or Hollywood don’t think this is a story. Even though Gosnell killed more people than Gary Ridgeway, John Wayne Gacey, The Zodiac Killer and Ted Bundy combined. In a 30 year killing spree, it is thought he killed 1000s of babies. And that wasn’t a national story?

Obama’s Economy in Action !  Just 17 PERCENT of college grads have real jobs waiting
Daily Caller – Eric Owens – 5/9/2014

Overall, the survey says, a paltry 17 percent of students have managed to land any kind of real job. That’s as of April.

Not surprisingly, given the need to make a living and pay off onerous student loans for the next few decades, 73 percent of the college seniors surveyed said they would very much like to have a job.

Even students who chose to major in in-demand career fields have reported serious trouble finding work, according to the AfterCollege survey. Among seniors who are about to get degrees in engineering, math and technology, for example, 81.6 percent are still seeking jobs.

Among business majors, just over 85 percent are still furiously and fruitlessly sending out resumes.

To reduce the debt, let Energy Lead the Way
Daily Caller - Kevin Palmer – 5/6/2014

The benefits of natural gas as a fuel — for heating homes, generating electricity, and as a raw material — are far-reaching, but Americans should be particularly intrigued by the effect that natural gas fracking is already having on local and state economies in gas-rich regions throughout the country. Fracking as an economic solution makes sense on all levels, and in states like North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, and others where the government has taken a common-sense approach to natural gas development, Americans are reaping the benefits. Unfortunately, the environmental lobby is halting progress in California and New York, and the Obama administration seems more concerned with assuaging radical green interests than improving the nation’s fiscal health.

Every job created by fracking means one more American earning a salary, spending money, and paying taxes, and one fewer American collecting unemployment from the government. This is the tried-and-true formula for debt reduction — the greater the ratio of people paying into the system versus people collecting, the sounder our fiscal situation will be. And among job-creation initiatives, fracking is particularly enticing, because it doesn’t require the government to do anything except stand out of the way. Natural gas development is driven by entrepreneurs and businesses taking risks, not by stimulus spending that only drives the debt higher.

The money generated by the burgeoning fracking boom won’t by itself pay down the $17.5 trillion national debt, but it’s a step in the right direction at a time when our country is searching for answers. Smart, pro-growth policies that strengthen the economy will cause the debt to shrink organically, reducing the amount of cuts that will be needed to eliminate it. Politicians — from the White House to state legislatures — need to listen to the numbers instead of fringe environmentalists, and set policies that promote responsible natural gas development.

Dissenting Scientists label White House Climate Report as ‘PSEUDOSCIENCE’
Daily Caller – Michael Bastasch – 5/6/2014

“It is to provide cover for a massive regulatory intrusion, and concomitant enormous costs in resources and individual liberty,” Michaels and Knappenberger wrote. “History tells us that when scientists willingly endorse sweeping governmental agendas fueled by dodgy science, bad things soon happen.”

Michaels’ and Knappenberger’s 75-page critique of the NCA points out the many weak points and flaws present in the government’s analysis of the impact of global warming. For example, the NCA relies on not only peer-reviewed scientific literature, but also non-peer reviewed work from environmental activist groups — which the government did not disclose.

The National Climate Data Center released its third NCA on Tuesday, which warns of an ever-worsening environment and extreme temperature rises due to man-made carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels. But it has been panned in some quarters.

“This National Assessment is much closer to pseudoscience than it is to science,” wrote scientists Patrick Michaels and Paul Knappenberger of the libertarian Cato Institute in their comments submitted to the Obama administration.

9 ObamaCare Predictions That have Come True
The Foundry – Robert Moffit – 5/5/2014

1. The individual mandate is an enforcement nightmare.
2. The law will create new disincentives to work.
3. The law, particularly the employer mandate, will impose new costs on businesses that undercut jobs and wages.
4. The law undermines competition and further consolidates health insurance markets.
5. The law guarantees major premium increases.
6. The law discourages insurance enrollment among the young.
7. The law’s Medicare savings would not financially strengthen Medicare.
8. The law’s Medicare changes will result in reduced benefits and threaten seniors’ access to care.
9. The law compels taxpayers to fund abortion and weakens protections of the right of conscience.

Educational opportunity continues to expand:  Kansas now a school choice state
The Foundry – Brittany Corona – 5/3/2014

Last week, Governor Sam Brownback (R) signed into law Kansas’ first school choice scholarship program—making it the 24th state to adopt private school choice.

Corporations that contribute to scholarship-granting organizations (which provide vouchers to low-income children and children with special needs to attend a private school of choice) can receive up to a 70 percent credit for their total tax liability. The credits are capped at $10 million, and eligible students can receive scholarships of up to $8,000 to attend a private school of choice. In order to be eligible, students must be assigned to a public school deemed “failing” by the state board of education and be from families who have a gross-income less than or equal to 130 percent of the federal poverty level or $30,615 for a family of four.

A conservative estimate offered by the Friedman Foundation suggests that some 35,000Kansas children could receive scholarships thanks to the new law.

“This is a win for Kansas students. This is a win for parents. … And it’s a win for property taxpayers,” said Brownback. These are “some of the most significant reforms we’ve seen for several years in the state.”

The new school choice program was part of a larger school-financing package that addresses the state Supreme Court order in Gannon v. Kansas. The court held that funding disparities between school districts violated the state’s Constitution. The legislature bridged the gap by providing choice to parents, raising the base aid per student to $4,492 (a 17 percent increase over current level), and ending teacher tenure.

With this reform Kansas is “putting the parent back in the driver’s seat of their kid’s education,”says James Franko, policy director of the Kansas Policy Institute.

House Committee Obtains Accurate ObamaCare Enrollment Figures that HHS says aren’t available
Godfather Politics – Dave Jolly – 5/3/2014

“On April 17, 2014, President Obama declared the success of his law, claiming that 8 million Americans had signed up for health insurance, but data from the insurance providers reveals that the president’s figure is largely misleading. As of April 15, 2014, insurers informed the committee that only 2.45 million had paid their first month’s premium for coverage obtained through the federally facilitated marketplace. While the administration has relied on questionable nationwide figures to boast the law’s success, the state-by-state breakdown compiled by the committee underscores the serious problems facing some states.”

The insurance companies reported that only 2.45 million people have actually paid their first month’s payment for the policies they purchased through the federal exchange. Add that to the various state exchanges and the figure comes to around 5.36 million that have successfully paid for their policies, which is 2.64 million short of Obama’s reported 8 million enrollees.

The results obtained by the House committee revealed the following breakdown of the successfully paying Obamacare policy purchasers:

“Nationwide (as of April 15, 2014), 67 percent of people had completed enrollment and paid their first month’s premium and 33 percent had not. Of those who had paid their first month’s premium:

Under 18: six percent;
Ages 18 to 25: 10 percent;
26 to 34: 15 percent;
35 to 44: 16 percent;
45 to 54: 23 percent;
55 to 64: 29 percent;
65 and older: 1 percent.”

If this breakdown holds true, by this time next year, the insurance industry will be in dire straits. They will be forced to increase the costs for healthcare policies which will lead many Americans to cancel because they will no longer be able to afford the high prices. The insurance industry will also be forced to turn to the federal government for a multi-billion dollar bail out, just like what happened to the auto and banking industries several years ago. And guess who ultimately pays for the multi-billion dollar bailout? Yep, you and me.

It’s an illusion:  Here are the REAL Unemployment Numbers
Freedom Outpost – Mac Slavo – 4/3/2013

The drop in the unemployment rate from March’s 6.7 percent came as the agency’s survey of households showed the labor force shrank by more the 800,000 in April.

The participation rate, which indicates the share of working-age people in the labor force, decreased to 62.8 percent, matching the lowest level since March 1978, from 63.2 percent a month earlier.

Thus, while U.S. companies added some 288,000 jobs last month, three times as many people were dropped from the official unemployment statistics and are no longer counted in the labor pool.

At this rate we’re well on our way to achieving the Communist dream of 0% unemployment before the end of the President’s term. We’re creating jobs at a slower pace now than at the same time last year.

At his web site Williams calculates the rate of employment using the same methods that were used prior to 1994 when they were officially defined out of existence by bureaucrats looking to pad the numbers.

According to those numbers, we’re looking at an unemployment rate of over 23%.

According to shocking new numbers that were just released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 20 percent of American families do not have a single person that is working.

So when someone tries to tell you that the unemployment rate in the United States is about 7 percent, you should just laugh. One-fifth of the families in the entire country do not have a single member with a job.

Religion and the Politics of Education
Eagle River Inn – Eagle River, WI
May 13, 2014 – 6:30 p.m.

The public is invited to a Townhall hosted by the Northwoods Patriots on Religion and the Politics of Education on May 13, 2014, at Eagle River Inn at 6:30 p.m.  According to Karen Schroeder, President of Advocates for Academic Freedom, “government has no more right to inhibit the study of religion than to promote it.”

Ms. Schroeder's presentation will address the impact that religion and education have had on American educational, social, political, and economic policies.

Is a political system or an educational system that embraces secularism complying with the Supreme Court requirement that public institutions remain neutral in matters of religion? If schools replace the study of religion with secularism, are the schools being fair?

Drawing upon her thirty-six years of experience teaching in public schools, Ms. Schroeder identifies the integral role of religion in the classroom. She testifies before legislative bodies about educational issues and is a member of Wisconsin's Educational Communications Board.  Thirty-eight publications carry her writings about educational issues.

The culture battles affecting classrooms tear apart the fabric of society and threaten efforts to reform education. Several suggested solutions will be offered including the belief that citizens must address the conflict between educational policies and the role of religion in our society. Political and religious factions must collaborate on a renewed vision of religious liberty in all educational settings.

The educational system upholds the First Amendment when religious liberty and rights of students of all faiths are protected. Ms. Schroeder will discuss Supreme Court cases and documents created by Human Secularists declaring that secularism is a religion just as is Hinduism, Buddhism, and other "isms". These court cases, according to Ms. Schroeder, answer the question: Are all students required to leave their religion at the school house door?

Ms. Schroeder introduces her presentation with Mahatma Gandhi's words: "Those who say that religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion is."

To become involved in this discussion, all are invited to attend Religion and the Politics of Education.  Ms. Schroeder will stay until all questions have been addressed.
