INCOME TAX AND FAIRNESS -- WHO DECIDES WHAT'S FAIR? AND FOR WHOM?

FLORIDA TODAY -- 9/19/2011 -- DON GILLELAND

The political mantra this season is the rich must pay their fair share of federal income taxes. What does that mean and who decides what is fair?
We have a regressive income-tax system. The more money you make, the higher the percentage of it must be paid to the government, and if you don’t make enough, the government will give you some in the form of welfare.

Even if we took all the money wealthy people make, it wouldn’t begin to be enough to pay for all of the benefits we need as a nation.

Fair is a relative thing, and it isn’t likely we will agree on a national definition any time soon.
