Amid tales of election board
incompetence in some of the most closely watched House races in the country —
double-counting ballots in one county, failing to count ballots in many others —
nervous candidates are on tenterhooks wondering if they won or lost. And
election lawyers are girding for drawn-out courtroom
fights.
Naturally, the biggest uproar
surrounds West, whose legal team has launched an assault on the St. Lucie County
Supervisor of Elections, accusing officials of gross incompetence. At issue is
the office’s handling of early votes, which West’s lawyers argue were
accidentally double-counted on election night and provided a winning margin to
Democratic candidate Patrick Murphy, who leads the congressman by nearly 2,000
votes.
