  • Fewer hours worked each week

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) labels people who are unemployed and no longer looking for work as “not in the labor force,” including people who have retired on schedule, taken early retirement, or simply given up looking for work.

READER COMMENT:  "DROPPED OUT" of the Labor Force?
Sorry, this does not parse, will not compute.
Save for those relative FEW who CHOOSE to be LAZY and POOR, those relative FEW who are TRULY Disabled, those vanishingly-FEW who hit the Lottery or Marry RICH?
A person who HAS worked, and is NOT well-off, will CONTINUE to work.
Besides the MONEY earned, the JOB satisfaction, and the sense of Self-Worth?
It's BORING to sit on one's AXX at home, and WISH there was something to DO with your life.
I work in the Unemployment Office. These STATISTICS are naught but well-crafted LIES.
FORGET the Official Line. Look at your OWN life, your FAMILY, your friends and neighbors.
Then tell me things are IMPROVING...

READER COMMENT:  "Those few who choose to be lazy...?" Wow, someone has a bad case of naivety. As we pay more and more unemployment benefits, food stamps, and welfare to more and more who don't seek work and enjoy government-paid television and housing. In this country it pays to be lazy. As long as this continues we will see the number of malingerers steadily increase.

READER COMMENT: And then you CUT OFF the waterfall of free stuff at just the right time and BOOM! You have an instant revolution, chaos in the streets and... sniff sniff... the people beg for a Leader who give them security in exchange for just a little loyalty.
Zeig Heil.

READER COMMENT:  It's called the Hegelian Dialectic
1. Create the problem
2. Have a reaction to the problem
3. Provide the solution
Open your eyes. This is what's been going on for ages.

READER COMMENT:  outside of elections, our government is incapable of fixing anything.
